Overlord 2

Overlord 2 title screen
Developer: Triumph Studios
Publisher: Codemasters

Overlord 2 is a direct sequel to Overlord from 2007. Development for all major platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PS 3) were all done by Triumph Studios in-house and it was again published by Codemasters.

Some of the major improvements were: more dependable AI, deeper gameplay mechanics, more customization and an overall higher production value. As a result, many of my contributions to this project are more or less in-line with my work for the original Overlord project. A lot of the core gameplay mechanics were smoothed and extended to improve the overall gameplay experience. The most notable addition was a 'mounting' system whereby Minions could climb on creatures and ride them around, providing them with features such as charge/burst damage and the ability to walk on walls. I also worked on some aspects of stealth gameplay and special custom attacks for unique types of enemies.

During the development of Overlord 2, we started on a paradigm shift whereby much more gameplay would be data driven. The implementation of a 'component' system enabled designers to more or less construct new object types by adding specific features they required. This system already proved itself very useful for Overlord 2 because it improved flexibility and enabled the designers to reduce their prototyping cycles.

All during the development of Overlord and Overlord 2 I also continued my studies at the Technical University in Delft for my Masters degree in Computer Science. Due to my full-time involvement with the Overlord series however, my studies turned into a rather protracted affair. It was not until after Overlord 2 that I finally manage to graduate.

Codemasters also released spin-offs titles of the Overlord franchise for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. These titles were developed by external companies however, and didn't involve any of Triumph Studios' technologies.
